Sailors on the Albemarle Sound have plenty of creeks and small rivers to seek haven when weather gets too rough. Many just sail in to anchor up and spend the weekend in the calm serene beauty between the old cypress trees. These dark water thoroughfares once connected Colonial North Carolina's agricultural commodities with the outside world as sailing schooners were able to take advantage of the deep water and deliver molasses and rum from the Caribbean and leave loaded down with cotton to transport to the North and Europe. The Cashie River was a major shipping route and was just wide enough in Windsor for these vessels to turn around and head back out to the Sound and into the Atlantic.
The long days of Summer allowed me to set up close to 8 p.m. for a quick study last night on the South end of King St. in Windsor where the old Shipyard used to be. This is the view the colonial schooner captains had as they headed back out.
