Last Friday, I attended Jacquelin Perry's art show at John "Possum" Silver's gallery in Manteo where I was reminded by Elizabeth City attorney, Phil Hornthal of an old favorite story of Jaquelin's family who were on a sailing trip in the Caribbean. They were all sitting down for dinner at some island restaurant one night when they noticed that Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall were at a table in the far corner. Everyone just glanced over but did not interrupt the Stones front man and his model girlfriend. Late for dinner was Jaquelyn's brother, Sam, who took a double look at the famous couple as he walked in and rushed over to invite them to join his family. Mr. Jagger politely responded, "Another time, Mate".
For the rest of the weekend, this became a catch-all phrase for us parents to respond to our kids' many pleas to go somewhere, to have a snack before dinner, or to buy some beach toy, etc. etc. It really felt good to say it, but the children were starting to dislike it and couldn't care less about hearing about who coined it and what band he sang in.
After cleaning some spot and croaker we had caught in the surf, I decided to refrain from using my new favorite substitution for the word "No" when the kids asked to go crabbing. We drove over to Nags Head Cove and crabbed the canals using the leftover fish heads . After one of the kids caught the subject of this painting, I took a few snaps before everyone begged to keep him. I told them that he was not big enough and had to be thrown back.
My daughter looked at him as he splashed in the water and said, "Another time, Mate".
