Waitin' on a Drink

16x20

Before the days of air conditioning, Nags Head cottages were built for the occupants to take full use of whatever wind happened to be blowing. If the unique structures were not built with wrap around porches most were built with an East, South and West porch. An East porch caught the most favored summer time breeze, the Northeast wind, and would also pull duty with an East or Southeast wind. If the Northeaster got to windy and cool, the West porch was the place to be as the main house served as a wind block. When it  blew Southwest or Northwest there was no other place to be for any relief from the heat than the South porch.
A consistent Southwest wind will bring high temps, biting flies, and cold water  to Northern Outer Banks beaches, so it is not uncommon during this weather pattern to find a couple of ladies with straw hats sitting on the South porch waiting on a cold drink.
