A few weeks ago, renown artist, Fred Saunders, asked me if I would like to accompany him one day and try some plein air painting. Before he could finish speaking, I cranked out about three "Yes Sirs" in a row. I was honored to be invited by someone such as he and had been ready for some time to take that leap into the new world of painting on site, outside and in the elements - literally and figuratively.
Earlier this week, Fred called and said that we would shoot for Friday if the weather permitted. I was instantly going over different easels and outside essentials with him that I researched on the Internet when he said not to buy a thing until I tried it and see if I liked it. He said to meet at the two red barns just off of Hwy 308 between Windsor and Aulander. For the first try, I painted off of a water color easel made sturdy with a rope and an anti-freeze bottle hanging from the center. An old TV dinner tray was my palette and a plastic baseball bucket held my turpentine.
As we both prepared to paint the same scene, Fred turned to me and said. "I'm going to show you a few things about the way I paint. They may not be right, but like my bird hunting, it's the way I shoot."
