Across the bridge over Dough's Creek in Downtown Manteo runs North Carolina's shortest Highway to Ice Plant Island - now known as Festival Park.  Highway 400 is only .93 miles and begins and ends within the town's city limits. Seen from the highway is the marsh that is moated by two mosquito ditches and borders Mother's Vineyard where centuries old Scuppernong grapevines still thrive. Rumored to be first planted by the first English Colonists known as The Lost Colony they are now believed to be indigenous vines that already were producing grapes by the time the colonists arrived. As we know now, the English settlers didn't hang around long to enjoy these grapes as it has been theorized they left the island fleeing from the hostile Indians. It you spend anytime near this marsh, then you can easily solve the first part of the mystery. They fled the mosquitoes - not the indians.
