After several years of success with Blue Jay Recreation Department, prominent community leaders in the Indian Woods Township answered Bart Smallwood's invitation in early 1976 to meet at Indian Woods Babtist Church and discuss his vision of creating a Fire Department near the recreation fields. With the help of county officials and then North Carolina Senate Pro Tempe J.J. "Monk" Harrington this predominately African American community raised the funds to buy a fire truck and fire fighting equipment for the all volunteer squad. The first recorded officers were President Bart Smallwood, Secretary James Pugh, Treasurer Robert Cherry, and Fire Chief Lloyd Cooper.
The town of Windsor is currently restoring the old Farrier and Blacksmith building near the old Windsor Hotel. I stopped by there earlier this Summer to see the progress and noticed this old fire engine sitting in the tall weeds behind the renovated structure. It must have been the first Blue Jay Fire Department truck.
Blue Jay Volunteer Fire Department is many members strong today, and last year during the devastating tornadoes that swept the Northern sections of Bertie County, it was one of the first responding squads to help rescue survivors.
