Always Look Both Ways

SOLD
16 x 20
Oil on Linen

Waiting to ask the owners of Old Salt Oyster Bar in Columbia if I could come in some time and get some pics of the bartenders and shuckers for some paintings, I could not help myself to run and snap these two walking down Main Street. This was a spur of the moment alley-opp thrown to me by the sun and a boyfriend and girlfriend on an early weekend stroll towards the boat slips at the end of town.  As one put it so simply in something I read recently, "the artist's job is to find romance in the mundane." I love that statement, as picturesque anomalies are already beautiful even before painted, but making an everyday humdrum scene pop to life is by far the most satisfying.

Not sure if I succeeded or not, but I sure had fun with this one using only alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow medium as my only colors. Slapping down paint from a limited palette with dirty brushes has been a liberating experience for a slob like myself.
