Better Get Ready!

Back in the heyday of bird hunting in Bertie County,  quail hunters and their dogs had the run of field edges and hedgerows with no shortage of quail. There are many theories as to why, but  now the bird is few and far between.  Fortunately,  people still get out and see a covey or two,  so maybe the worst is over, and the bird is on an upswing.

Out on a fall day working the field edges with a couple of good dogs that can hold their point has to be fun whether you see a bird or not. With their tails up and pointing, these dogs have to be telling their owner that he'd better get ready to shoot.
