One of only a handful of pretty warm days this Winter brought out the kid in everyone at Jockey's Ridge last weekend in Nags Head. The Northeaster that had been pounding the beach days earlier with forty mile and blistery cold and rainy winds finally relented and switched to a Southwesterly offshore breeze that broke the cloud cover and warmed the sand to a comfortable temperature - an irresistible invitation to a car load of eleven year old girls trapped in a tangled web of headphones and ipads.
Minutes later, with the 21st century left in sleep mode and safely locked in the car, these girls took off their shoes, rolled up their pants legs, and ran full speed back in time to a place that hasn't been tainted or tarnished by sprawl since humans began walking the planet - thanks to the tireless efforts of Carolista "Tootsie" Baum back in the 1970's who fought ferociously to have the state declare the dunes a park and save it from development.
