This is the Shanklin Bell Tower at my old high school, VES, in Lynchburg, Va. The bell tower was a crossroads of sorts for me when I was a student marking the line between academic boarder life and freedom to hit the road on weekend leave. It was the first thing I saw when I returned to campus on late Sunday afternoons dreading the evening study hall and Monday morning classes. It was also the last thing I saw on Fridays when school was finally out, and I was in full sprint to the parking lot where Mason Brugh's '67 white dodge dart was waiting to take us away once again.
My 25th reunion was a couple of weeks ago, and the Shanklin Family, who built the bell tower, attended as well. I donated School's Out to VES who in turn auctioned it at the reunion dinner Saturday Night. The Shanklin Family won. They will keep the painting for their lifetime and return it to VES in their will.
