This is a painting of my grandparents in the 1950's in front of their cottage at Nags Head. A couple of years ago my brother and aunt burned a lot of old family home movies on dvd and gave it to me. My favorite clip was my grandparents, their grown kids and friends on the beach, all three sheets to the wind, trying to croaker fish. I had always heard about the time family friend, Coleman Elliott, stumbling down to the water line, casting his bottom rig out over the breakers and the rod slipping through his hands and into to the ocean too. Everyone jumped in laughing, yelling, and falling over each other to find the rod. When they finally found it two fish were on. Surprisingly, this was all captured on film, and I was able to see an old family story unfold right in front of my eyes.
The clip ended with my grandparents, Pop and Mae Bell, wading in the ocean later that afternoon and trying the croaker again.
