Dryin' Out

5x7
Oil on Canvas
SOLD

Last September, my friend Josh Kilpatrick and I put over at Pirate's Cove and spent most of the first light hours of the morning drifting and cast netting for minnows in John's Ditch - a meandering slough that snakes through the marshlands that hug the east side of Roanoke Island.  It was a few days after Hurricane Irene had cut a whole new channel to the ocean just north of Oregon Inlet and the water was still mucky and dirty even though a northeast wind had been blowing for a few days.  Disappointed with the slow flounder fishing, we headed back towards the Wanchese Industrial Park where commercial and charter fishing boats dot the harbor - except for this day. Most were still dry docked from the storm and were scattered about the grounds drying out and getting whatever repairs needed while they were out of the water. This allowed me to get some good snaps from our boat, and I was able to view a few to come up with this painting - which I did mostly with a pallet knife.
