Mackey's Marina is a boat yard on a small creek that snakes its way through moss covered cypress trees on the Washington County side of the Albemarle Sound. Before the bridges, a ferry ran out of here to the Chowan County side. With just enough imagination,  the place was named Mackey's Ferry.

Crap pots litter the overgrown grass as old wooden crabbers are loosely tied up to the natural banks. After being hauled out to the sound beyond the drop off, these red chicken wired contraptions are baited with shrimp heads, rotten fish, and any other foul smelling meat and then thrown overboard to soak and catch a load of blue crabs.

Early Fall at Mackeys is a beautiful place to paint as Jane Perry pointed out with her many sketches of the docks and dry docked boats. I had to find some shade though and settled on the Sheila J as she was waiting on her pots to be loaded in the back.
