In late Spring Bertie County turns purple as it becomes the largest sage producing region in the World. The plant is harvested and sold to Avoca Farm where it is processed for perfume and other commercial uses. Because of Tropcial Storm Andrea there are a few fields left that haven't been picked because it is too wet to get equipment in the fields.. Last night I got permission to ride down Charlie Harden's sage patch and set up in his path to paint the field and his shelters and bins in the background.
If you happen to ride through Bertie County this time of year there are beautiful fields of sage at every turn. As corny as it may seem, I can't help but to always think of the old seventies psychedelic country western band New Riders of the Purple Sage when I'm on the road rubber necking over these endless plains of lavender and magenta.
