Connecting the waterfront of Edenton North Carolina and Hayes Plantation is the small wooden bridge over Queen Anne's Creek. Once over the bridge one practically drives back in time to an Old South scene that Joel Chandler Harris and Margaret Mitchel would have struggled to give its beauty justice in written word. Behind the fortress of cypress trees are acres and acres of cotton, peanuts, and soybeans overlooking the Albemarle Sound. In addition to transportation to and from the farm, the bridge has for generations provided a perfect place for folks to throw their minnows and worms out on a cane pole and bobber to catch speckle perch hanging around the support pilings. Last Friday evening was no exception as several lined up on both sides of the bridge as the sun set over the Bertie County side of the sound and lit up the Creek's shoreline.
