The Pumping Station

11 x 14
Oil on Wood Panel
Commissioned Painting
SOLD

Originally built in the 1900's to drain 50,000 acre Lake Mattamuskeet for agricultural purposes in Hyde County, North Carolina, the "Pumping Station" was later decommissioned in the 1930's when the Federal Government purchased the lake and designated it as a waterfowl sanctuary.  The building served as a lodge for several decades and is now in the process of being fully restored as it has become the de facto icon / logo of the refuge.

The lake is now under threat again with issues of drainage management allowing brackish and saltwater to enter the lake threatening the food source for migratory waterfowl . Visit http://www.savemattamuskeetlake.net/ to see how you can help.
