Hold the Slaw

A few weeks ago my son and I walked to Bunns Barbecue for lunch and sat down on the long wooden benches in front of the eating bar in the serving room. There was no ordering as the ladies knew what we wanted - a small plate, sandwich with no slaw and two teas. After this process was complete, it was time for the next phase of lunch at Bunns if sitting in the serving room - verbal volley ball with Janice and Karen.

I usually start up with throwing them a bone about my friend and Bunns co-owner Randy Russell who sits behind the front counter collecting cash while watching the stock market on his ipad - that is when he isn't in Florida. This is always a good warm up and will always conclude with a zinger from behind the counter about wishing he would go on back down there. After this is out of the way, it is every man for himself, and one had better have his or her game on, or the wise cracking can quickly turn into a two on one feeding frenzy - all without missing a beat serving up barbecue.

This particular day I was just about in the end game and about to leave my tip unscathed when suddenly I found myself backed into the corner about being an artist. After a few potshots about me sure not looking like one, Karen said that they had heard there was a painting of them up at the arts council, but they had never seen it. I returned with a simple idea that they should walk up there and see it. I should have seen it coming, and of course I got the, "if I ever had time to get out of this place I would, etc, etc." I then said that I would paint them myself and bring the painting one day to Bunns for a personal viewing. So here it is - Janice and Karen doing their thing. Poised and ready to serve - I mean strike.
