Griffin's Shipyard sits on the banks of the Pasquotank River in Downtown Elizabeth City, NC. The sun finally came out, and I called Lloyd Griffin to see if I could set up in the boat yard. As I pulled in and began getting my stuff out, Reggae music was blaring from a boombox sitting on an upside down fuel barrel. The extension chord snaked into a leaning dilapidated shack that reeked of resin, fiberglass and some other smokey odor. As Toots and Maytals began a new song, Cap'n Rasta Ledell, the chief of the shipyard, walked out to see exactly what it was that I was pulling out of my car. I introduced myself and told him that I had talked with Lloyd and was going to block in a quick study of the sailboat in the back.
Not really sure what it was that I was really up to, Ledell followed me over to the shade where I began to set up. When he saw my easel and paint, everything was cool and back to normal again. He said, " Ahh, going to paint the Sea Fever! Yeah, she needs some work!"
