Oil on Linen Board
Painted from memory
Last weekend I took my plein air back pack ready to get a study in at Nags Head, but that time never arrived as my kids kept me busy on the beach the whole time. One day was pretty warm with a humid west wind knocking the waves back and providing some cotton ball clouds above. Whether it be a mental disorder or a result of my passion to paint or a little of both, I constantly view things now in shapes and values analyzing each scene as a good or bad composition.
Each morning I would walk out on the beach and throw a stick for my Boykin before the crowds and beach patrol settled in. I kept looking North towards Nags Head Pier and doing my usual - closing my good eye and viewing the scene with my bad one with all the shapes blurred and edges gone. I had decided that this would be a good set up with the clouds, but I never could get the time to try it. When I returned home, I decided to do one strictly from memory.
