High Tea in the Colonnade

SOLD
9 x 12
Oil on Panel Board

A workshop study of Mama Doris Watson who has served tea at the Greenbrier for over fifty years.  I was very fortunate to take instruction from California Impressionist Randall Sexton (http://www.rcsexton.com/) in White Sulphur Springs at Walls Gallery ( http://www.wallsgallery.com/).  Most of the class was Plein Air, but the last day it rained, so we set up inside in the now declassified  Doomsday Bunker under the Greenbrier Resort. The bunker was secretly constructed during the apex of the Cold War to ensure continuity of government and house the highest echelons of Federal office in the event of a nuclear attack from the Russians. The closest it came to serving its original purpose was during the Cuban Missle Crisis. With its white walls and warm phosphorescent lighting, this shrine of the Apocalypse ironically became a de facto art studio instead as Randy projected this image from his laptop of Ms. Doris on the wall for us to paint.
